Review of the film "22 miles";
James Silva (Wahlberg) is a special forces agent for whom there are no impossible tasks. They are called "Ghosts" because no documents record the existence of the unit. In Indonesia, they need to bring a valuable witness to the airport, who is being hunted.…
The new collaboration between Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg immerses the viewer into the atmosphere of an ultra-modern spy thriller with eternal surveillance, terrorist attacks in broad daylight and the competition of several omnipotent special services at once. The result, of course, cannot be compared with the last part of “Mission Impossible”, but “22 miles” does not try to be it. If Ethan Hunt's espionage adventures have long been a self-mocking parade of dizzying stunts, then Berg's painting takes itself too seriously, and this makes the shortcomings of the production even more obvious.
All the necessary ingredients are in place: a chase on which the safety of the world depends, cool as a boiled egg, heroes on both sides of the barricades, endless shooting and wild fights. But the chase, which is the plot of the film, is poorly thought out in terms of time and sequence of events. The characters sometimes move forward too slowly, sometimes they fly on wings. The action doesn't seem to be bad, especially the fights involving the charismatically calm hero Iko Wise, but the editing is terribly flawed. It is almost impossible to keep track of what is happening on the screen at such moments, so the tension gradually subsides, while it should increase. The characters, especially Silva Wahlberg, sometimes speak very fast, but they also speak dialogues that speed will not help. The final scenario, which puts everything that went before upside down, is not the worst that could have been, but in general the film does not save.
There's something wrong with the characters and actors, too. First of all, this concerns the central character. According to the prologue, this is a man with a brain disorder that makes him think too fast and causes bouts of anger all the time. Therefore, in order to keep her attention on what is happening around her, Silva hurts herself by slapping her hand with an elastic band. This technique gets boring very quickly, especially since this is the only characteristic feature of the character, otherwise it's just a guy with a bad temper. Yes, and for a person with a quick intellect, Silva is sometimes frankly dumb. Lauren Cohen, in the role of his tough subordinate, is perceived better and deserves her own film. Best of all, the hero of the already mentioned Wise came out in the picture, with his Olympic calmness and extraordinary fighting abilities.
The finale hints at a sequel or a whole new franchise, but it's unlikely to happen. Although the film is not as bad as most reviewers claim, it is an easy target for criticism precisely for its excessive seriousness, which is not supported either by plot or acting. As a fairly dynamic action film, it is worthy of one viewing, but there is no desire to continue acquaintance with James Silva.
