SUPPORT AND LECTURING PERSONNEL OBTAIN TRAINING ON PROJECT MANAGEMENT NQF LEVEL 4
The College in the preceding years has taken concerns of its employees on staff development and training very seriously. For the reasons that the College believes that no personnel should be stagnant in their professional growth. It also believes that well trained and capacitated personnel it be support or lecturing staff member will be able to produce greater quality and work-output than untrained employees. “Since training is believed to increase the skills for the employees in the performance of a particular job”.
The most recent training was held at the College Skills Academy from the 11th to the 16th March 2019.
ETDP SETA funded the College to train 30 personnel, which included the lecturing, and support staff on Project Management on NQF Level 4. The Purpose of this module is to capacitate College officials at various levels and upgrade their professional skills to enable them to implement better project management skills for future projects they might embark on.
The programme aims at focusing on the fundamentals of project management wherein to lay a foundation for eventual inclusion of any type of management such as managing finances, project monitoring and other expertise. Trainees were equipped with knowledge on implementation, managing and leading of projects within different working environments. They also acquired in-depth understanding of concepts of Project Management and will be able to plan and organise projects in the future.
The is College yet to further implement the Human Resources Policy on Staff Training and Development to make certain that more employees are trained and make sure it realises its strategic vision and mission as employees will be fully effective and equipped with knowledge to execute their tasks.
Motivational Session for Prevocational Learning Students (PLP)
Goldfields TVET College hosted a motivational session for Prevocational Learning students at the Tosa Campus on the 27 February 2019.
The session was organized by Senior Lecturer Mr PA Molefe who is also the PLP Mathematics Lecturer and Mr M Khitsane (Head of Department). The presentations were done by Dr Radile (Deputy Principal: Academic Services) and Mrs Mofokeng (Acting Deputy Principal: Registrar).
Dr Radile’s presentation was focused on the importance and the value of positive attitude. The basis of the presentation was the DHET Lecturer Support System PowerPoint presentation “A Small Truth to Make Life 100%” and the well-known, simple, yet powerful story of the four people Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.
Mrs Mofokeng spoke about the significance of Life Skills in shaping and impacting lives as well as overcoming the odds through education. She emphasized the need to work hard consistently and regularly, to be neat and organized. Students were also advised to make use of this once off opportunity and to work as a united team.
In the end, the students committed to working hard and initiated study groups. They also were excited about taking part in enrichment programs such as Public Speaking, Spelling B, and other Maths and Science related competitions.
A spokesperson of the PLP group thanked the college for demonstrating that they care about them and for committing to support them throughout.
NCV LEVEL 3 HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT STUDENTS SIMULATING BUSINESS IDEAS DURING MARKET DAY
On the 15 March 2019 NCV Level 3 Hospitality Management students embarked on an assignment whereby they were expected to display counter services skills and interact with the customers. Students were required to make different cultural cuisines from scratch and sell them to the customers. The event was public and it saw College students, lecturers and other stakeholders supporting this initiative.
The purpose of this annual event is for the students to simulate the real-world business experience and teach them to network with confidence as this is essential when working in the hospitality industry. For these reasons, the expectation is that the students will be able to develop core hospitality competencies such as hotel/ food & beverage operations, performance and control, front desk operations, customer relations/services coupled with marketing strategies depending on the presentations that can be most appealing to the customers.
Miss Nompulelo Lekhuleni a hospitality lecturer at the College and project leader of this initiative faiths that this will help the students to acquire the much needed and relevant skills students need in the Hospitality Industry comprising of – high level of customer service, working harmoniously with clients in a customer-facing environment, teamwork, good communication skills, high Levels of cultural awareness. Have the ability to multitask and be flexible, since working in the hospitality environment can be physically and mentally demanding, nonetheless requiring quality service.
THE PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE ON HIGHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING OVERSIGHT VISIT
The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training oversight visit at Goldfields TVET COLLEGE ,Welkom Campus. On the 31 January 2019 to assess mainly the 2019 registration process,teaching and learning , infrastructure and governance at the college .
LEBOHANG MOLEFI TO REPRESENT THE COLLEGE AT NATIONAL SKILLS COMPETITION TO BE HELD IN DURBAN
During October 2018, The College hosted a World Skills Competition in masonry (bricklaying) that was held at Tosa Campus in collaboration with the Construct Industry Development Board(CIDB) on behalf of World Skills South Africa. World Skills Competition is an International competition held bi-annually at the elected venue around the world. The last competition was held in 2017 at Dubai. This year’s competitions will be held in Kazan, Russia.
Lebohang Molefi a student at Tosa Campus won the Provincial leg of the competitions in bricklaying last year. All this was achieved under the supervision and guidance of Ivan van der Ross, bricklaying Lecturer at Tosa Campus. On the 04th February Lebohang built a model for the purpose of best preparing him for the National Competitions which will be held on 23rd of February 2019. At this level all Provincial winners in bricklaying will compete against each other to enable them to compete in Kazan later this year.
The focus of this competition is centred around many other trades which comprise of: plumbing; hospitality; carpentry; welding; automotive repairs; fitting and turning; hairdressing etcetera. The College is excited and looking forward to support Lebohang Molefi in Durban and is hopeful that he will fly the College Banner and represent the College well at the International competitions in Kazan.
ANNUAL BEST PRACTICE ACADEMIC SEMINAR 2019
On the 07th of February 2019 The Lecturers attended the Annual Best Practice Seminar at Welkom Campus. The purpose of behind this seminar was to afford the College lecturers, management coupled with the invited guests from sister Colleges, Department of Higher Education and Training to share best practices and express mission to achieve academic excellence.
The Seminar had Dr Pitso Kheza Student Support Services Manager and Mr Peka Qhojeng Project Manager for Occupational Programmes as Programme Directors. Mr Francis Mahlangu the College Principal welcomed guests while Dr Rachere Radile Deputy Principal for Academic Services unpacked the College’s 2018 academic performance and he also indicated that lecturers should endeavour to benchmark with other best performing Colleges in South Africa.
Engineering Studies Lecturer Mr Jasper Cotzee and Business Studies Lecturer Mr Mxolisi Makasi shared best practices on teaching National Certificate Vocational NC(V) programmes. Other Lecturers who made presentations include Mr Aaron Nkukuma Business Studies Lecturer and Engineering Lecturer Mr Ngagazibini Zonyane shared best practices for teaching Report 191 programmes.
It was explained that students spend the better part of their lives in the classrooms and that it was therefore crucial to create the correct environment for them to learn and grow. Also, that dealing with students from different backgrounds required high levels of understanding from the lecturers coupled with great determination to establish good communication between lecturers and students. Presenting Lecturers cited on how all College lecturers should be game-changers, provide inspiration, and encourage the students to dream big converse to their history of being previously classified as poor performing in some subjects by their “unimaginative” high school educators.
One Lecturer revealed that his formula for success could be attributed to his successful spiritual connection with his students. He indicated that each lecture was started with prayer in order to enhance the spirituality of the students. Another focal issue raised was that concerted efforts must be made to instill a positive attitude on the Psyche of the students and to steer them away from being armchair critics of the government. It was also highlighted that the students were supposed to be schooled in the reality of life and be equipped with foresight of the challenges they were to face following the successful completion of their studies at Goldfields TVET College.
Several discussions were held as part of the seminar during which a number of issues were put up for deliberations. Mrs Selloane Maqelepo, Campus Manager at Tosa Campus and Mr. Ratsilo Maleke Welkom Campus Manager, led some of discussions on the Campus Life and the relationship of Lecturers and their students. Ms Nozipho Khumalo, Deputy Director Student Development & Support spoke on contextualizing Academic Support within the TVET Colleges while Mr Sello Sethusha, Director for Lecturer Development at Department of Higher Education and Training spoke on Lecturer Development activities within the TVET College sector and the benefits thereof. Mr Mahlangu mentioned that the College was planning to bestow awards to those lecturers who performed best during the 2018 Academic Year lecturers in terms of student results later in the year as part of Employee Recognition Awards.
